Bills Passed to Investigate Poor Maternal/Fetal Outcomes

So, just as a quick update to my last post: Arkansas seems to be on board with investigating our poor birth climate here in the natural state! Two bills have been passed this month that aim to look into this issue. "With roughly half of pregnancy-related deaths being preventable, state maternal mortality review committees can be instrumental to as to understanding why women are dying during pregnancy, childbirth and the year postpartum. The committees also help in improving m

On MLK, Birth, and Hate

When you are flying solo on parenting a three day weekend isn't much of a treat. However, through all of the yelling and wrestling and mess I am trying to remember what a privilege it is for me to be able to stay home with these little munchkins - to be here for and with them. Not everyone is afforded that gift: not my husband, many thousands of miles away, for instance. As I break up the 100th fight today, I try to hold on to this feeling of gratitude - and my mind flits to

First Birthday Portrait Session

Last weekend I had the joy of hanging out with one of my favorite families again in their home - celebrating a family gathering and the first Birthday of their precious little girl, Cora. This family has been with me since Cora was so very fresh from the womb and all the milestones in between! Thank you guys for being such awesome clients and friends (and not to mention all the awesome referrals!!!). Check out this sweet girl: #breastfeeding #babypictures #Baby #LittleRock #A

Blessings and Miracles: Liam's Birth Story

***On the anniversary of his beautiful birth, Liam's mommy put his birth story into words. I am so honored that she has graciously allowed me to share them here!*** A story about joy in the midst of suffering, peace in the midst of chaos, angels, miracles, and the like. :) "I remember us talking about how we envisioned our "birth story" being, the way people get to pick and choose options these days - arrange the setting, music, guest list, etc. - as though it were a wedding

Podcast Interview

Last week I was very excited to be guest on a new local podcast. Elizabeth Silverstein of Hew And Weld is a transplant to our state but I felt an immediate connection with her - we are both story tellers! She put me at ease and our chat/interview was a lot of fun <3 If you are so inclined read or take a listen here. I definitely opened up about some things I haven't really talked about here before such as how this whole birth photography adventure started! "[I] was invited to

Arkansas Birth Matters

Arkansas Birth Matters. This is my home and when the military told us to pick any place in the United States to return to after our stint in Europe - Arkansas is where we picked. My roots are here and I love it: so instead of heading somewhere with a better birth culture, I came home. I personally may be done having children but I cannot sit idly by and ignore birthing women in my home state being robbed of choice. Being abused by their caregivers. Having to deal with rules a

Hospital Lotus Birth

Even after a couple of excellent meals and a good night's sleep I am still rocking the high from yesterday's birth! This sweet family was expecting their fourth baby - and waiting to be surprised with gender (after three girls). As we all hung out in the brand new hospital room, bedecked with a twinkle light curtain and full of precious little girls, love and laughter were the prevailing themes. Mom and her doula have been together for previous births and this history gave so

Interview With a Postpartum Doula

And now for something a little different! I think a lot of people are familiar at this point with what a labor doula does, but did you know that there are doulas who specialize in different areas? Recently there was an article making the rounds about postpartum doulas and their popularity with millennial parents (see the article here) - I sure wish I had known they existed with my boys! I decided to seek out some info on our local options so I spoke to doula Sondra Rodocker.

What to Pack for your Baptist Little Rock Hospital Birth - Updated + Free Checklist!

Updated June 26, 2020 There are plenty of lists of what to pack for when it's GO TIME. I've looked at a fair few myself! That said, what I've packed has certainly changed through the years and births. With my first son 9 years ago I packed just about everything. A huge rolling suitcase full of things we mostly didn't use. With my second son we packed a lot of labor comforts (ipod/dock/custom labor mix) but had relaxed so much we didn't even have a pretty receiving blanket for

Best Babymoon Locations in Arkansas

Arkansas mommies-to-be: are you planning a babymoon and need something local/last minute? Never fear, Arkansas has plenty of relaxing options for a great get away before baby! And that is extra good news if you've had to cancel your beach summer travel plans! Of course you knew your life was going to change as soon as you saw those two pink lines appear (although you may not have known it was going to change this drastically! Thanks a lot 2020...) Pandemic aside, if you are a
