Motherhood Minis

So...I'm a procrastinator, ya'll. I had plans to schedule Motherhood Mini Sessions this year - celebrating raw, beautiful motherhood...but...deployment. Kids. Life. You know how that goes! But as I am in the throes of this thing called motherhood - much like you guys - I can see the beauty and strength mixed in with the frustration and overwhelm. I send my husband photos of the kids, of the garden, of the organized play room. But I'm never in the photos. I am single parenting

Why Choose Me? Will it be Worth the Investment?

If you know me, you know I am the nice and unassuming sort; an empath and a peacemaker. I want everyone to be happy! It feels icky to even try and convince someone they should choose me over someone else. So be aware that I am absolutely not doing that. There are many incredible established photographers to choose from in the Central Arkansas area who have documented births. And if you connect with another tog and feel that they are the right person for your birth space...tha

Why I do what I do

Why pursue birth photography? It seems an odd sort of job, no? I guess first I have to tell you a little more about me. I have always loved birth. As a young teen I was a voracious reader (still am, in between toddler snot and tantrums...) One fateful day I happened upon Karen Cushman's The Midwife's Apprentice. I read it. I read it again. And again. Then hit the library and read everything I could get my hands on pertaining to midwifery and birth. I loved it. There is someth

Joy and Pain - Arkansas Birth Photography

Life can be scary and painful. But life is also beautiful and joyful! And just as those two facts describe life in general, they also can describe the experience of childbirth. I think we, as humans, have a tendency to try and skim over the ugly and focus on only the pretty facade. But that's not the whole truth, is it? The pain is also a part of our story, the story of humanity. Sometimes humanity goes through periods of suffering. Often we are refined through this fire and

The Birth of Baby Blake - Central Arkansas Birth Photography, Conway, Arkansas.

Last week I had the honor of attending the beautiful birth of a very special rainbow baby. We met at Conway Regional at 10:00 pm after which a little bit of hurry up and wait ensued. Once mama was out of triage and in a room we reconvened. Mama is a doula and was so calm and collected she made birth look easy, not to mention beautiful! I adore photographing body art out in the wild... Sweet baby Blake gave us a little scare with some meconium but he was such a trooper and pin

Passion

Why is birth my passion? It does seem an odd interest, especially considering I've loved the very concept of birth since I was 13. I have just always felt called to it - to the ritual transition of a new life coming earthside and the transition from woman to warrior mother/family. Had I been born 200+ years ago maybe I would have been the village midwife. Who knows. Either way it would have been absolutely ordinary that, as a woman, I would have attended and assisted at women

The Birth of my Middle Son (Little Rock, Arkansas)

My first birth fell far from the natural ideal I had imagined. I was in my early 20s and my marriage wasn't where it should have been. At 37 weeks, after being plagued by a misbehaving gallbladder throughout the pregnancy, I was told we needed to induce for a rare liver condition. Despite having a fascination for midwives and natural birth already, I had been too stressed to prepare and had no way to cope with an induced labor. I did not set up a birth plan or support team fo

Why is Birth a Story Worth Telling?

Ina May Gaskin in her Guide to Childbirth says this: "Stories teach us in ways we can remember. They teach us that each woman responds to birth in her unique way and how very wide-ranging that way can be...Birth stories told by women who were active participants in giving birth often express a good deal of practical wisdom, inspiration, and information for other women. Positive stories shared by women who have had wonderful childbirth experiences are an irreplaceable way to t
