Blessings and Miracles: Liam's Birth Story

***On the anniversary of his beautiful birth, Liam's mommy put his birth story into words. I am so honored that she has graciously allowed me to share them here!*** A story about joy in the midst of suffering, peace in the midst of chaos, angels, miracles, and the like. :) "I remember us talking about how we envisioned our "birth story" being, the way people get to pick and choose options these days - arrange the setting, music, guest list, etc. - as though it were a wedding

Birth: My First Love

As some of you may know, we just bought our first house! It's been pretty exciting around here, what with getting things out of storage that have been there for four years while we traveled abroad! Hello KITCHEN AID MIXER! How I've missed you, darling ;) This morning I was chipping away at the basement playroom when I stumbled across an old flash drive. I vaguely remembered that I might have used it for my college papers and was curious to see what forgotten secrets it contai

Arkansas Birth Matters

Arkansas Birth Matters. This is my home and when the military told us to pick any place in the United States to return to after our stint in Europe - Arkansas is where we picked. My roots are here and I love it: so instead of heading somewhere with a better birth culture, I came home. I personally may be done having children but I cannot sit idly by and ignore birthing women in my home state being robbed of choice. Being abused by their caregivers. Having to deal with rules a

Hospital Lotus Birth

Even after a couple of excellent meals and a good night's sleep I am still rocking the high from yesterday's birth! This sweet family was expecting their fourth baby - and waiting to be surprised with gender (after three girls). As we all hung out in the brand new hospital room, bedecked with a twinkle light curtain and full of precious little girls, love and laughter were the prevailing themes. Mom and her doula have been together for previous births and this history gave so

What to Pack for your Baptist Little Rock Hospital Birth - Updated + Free Checklist!

Updated June 26, 2020 There are plenty of lists of what to pack for when it's GO TIME. I've looked at a fair few myself! That said, what I've packed has certainly changed through the years and births. With my first son 9 years ago I packed just about everything. A huge rolling suitcase full of things we mostly didn't use. With my second son we packed a lot of labor comforts (ipod/dock/custom labor mix) but had relaxed so much we didn't even have a pretty receiving blanket for

Why Choose Me? Will it be Worth the Investment?

If you know me, you know I am the nice and unassuming sort; an empath and a peacemaker. I want everyone to be happy! It feels icky to even try and convince someone they should choose me over someone else. So be aware that I am absolutely not doing that. There are many incredible established photographers to choose from in the Central Arkansas area who have documented births. And if you connect with another tog and feel that they are the right person for your birth space...tha

Why I do what I do

Why pursue birth photography? It seems an odd sort of job, no? I guess first I have to tell you a little more about me. I have always loved birth. As a young teen I was a voracious reader (still am, in between toddler snot and tantrums...) One fateful day I happened upon Karen Cushman's The Midwife's Apprentice. I read it. I read it again. And again. Then hit the library and read everything I could get my hands on pertaining to midwifery and birth. I loved it. There is someth

Little Rock Vbac Birth - Central Arkansas Birth Photography

Last Friday night I received my favorite kind of text. Another mama having contractions, several minutes apart. Time for another birth day! I met my clients at the hospital and determined that yes, we had been following each other around the parking deck, after missing the entrance more than once. Ha! Directional sense is not one of my strengths and I bet dad had something a little more pressing on his mind. After a walk punctuated with contractions and the welcome arrival of

The Birth of Baby Blake - Central Arkansas Birth Photography, Conway, Arkansas.

Last week I had the honor of attending the beautiful birth of a very special rainbow baby. We met at Conway Regional at 10:00 pm after which a little bit of hurry up and wait ensued. Once mama was out of triage and in a room we reconvened. Mama is a doula and was so calm and collected she made birth look easy, not to mention beautiful! I adore photographing body art out in the wild... Sweet baby Blake gave us a little scare with some meconium but he was such a trooper and pin

Passion

Why is birth my passion? It does seem an odd interest, especially considering I've loved the very concept of birth since I was 13. I have just always felt called to it - to the ritual transition of a new life coming earthside and the transition from woman to warrior mother/family. Had I been born 200+ years ago maybe I would have been the village midwife. Who knows. Either way it would have been absolutely ordinary that, as a woman, I would have attended and assisted at women

The Birth of my Middle Son (Little Rock, Arkansas)

My first birth fell far from the natural ideal I had imagined. I was in my early 20s and my marriage wasn't where it should have been. At 37 weeks, after being plagued by a misbehaving gallbladder throughout the pregnancy, I was told we needed to induce for a rare liver condition. Despite having a fascination for midwives and natural birth already, I had been too stressed to prepare and had no way to cope with an induced labor. I did not set up a birth plan or support team fo

Why is Birth a Story Worth Telling?

Ina May Gaskin in her Guide to Childbirth says this: "Stories teach us in ways we can remember. They teach us that each woman responds to birth in her unique way and how very wide-ranging that way can be...Birth stories told by women who were active participants in giving birth often express a good deal of practical wisdom, inspiration, and information for other women. Positive stories shared by women who have had wonderful childbirth experiences are an irreplaceable way to t
